Certificates and Diplomas
General Requirements for the Diploma and the Certificate
- If a student has passed all other requirements for the Diploma and has passed UC 010, but has failed UC 10A and/or UC 10B, the Academic Sub-Committee may recommend to the faculty that the student be granted the Diploma, especially when the student's first language is not English.
- Requests for exemptions or substitutions for specific requirements must be made in writing by the student, with an attached recommendation by the student's Warden, to the Academic Sub-Committee, which will then make a recommendation on the request to the faculty. Such requests must be based on grounds of previous academic attainment, institutional experience, or on other special circumstances. Requests must be made prior to the term in which the course would normally be taken. Exemptions will not normally be granted after the course should have been taken or after a student has failed a course.
- Full-time students for the Certificate or Diploma must register for a minimum of 12 credits, and not more than 18 credits, in any semester.
- The Diploma programme is normally a four-year programme for full-time students. Diploma students planning to spend only three years in college should enter with a minimum of 12 credits already granted by the faculty for previous work.
- A candidate who has not satisfactorily completed the required courses for the Diploma may be considered for the award of the Certificate in Ministerial Studies. The Diploma in Ministerial Studies together with the B.A. Theology degree from UWI are accepted by many seminaries overseas as qualifications for graduate studies.
- Candidates for the Certificate or the Diploma must be recommended by their church and under the care of a Warden during their time at UTCWI.
Evaluation
An annual review committee will meet to assess the progress of each candidate for the Certificate or Diploma. This review committee will consist of at least 3 Wardens, including the student's own Warden, and one other member of the academic staff. Results of this review process will be reported to the student by his or her Warden.
This evaluation will take into consideration the student's academic progress, growth in ministerial formation, and participation in the life of the college community. All candidates are expected to participate in the conduct of daily devotions, to attend college events such as Quiet Day, the college retreat, Founders' events, and community ecumenical gatherings. Final year students are expected to preach at a Wednesday morning community service of worship.
