Graduate Studies Admissions

The United Theological College offers a variety of programmes for graduate study in religion and theology. Ministers, teachers, and anyone interested in a serious study of the Bible, Christian theology, or pastoral practice can find a suitable programme to enter. Men and women of any Christian tradition or religious faith are invited to enter into a rewarding learning experience in an ecumenical setting.

Master of Arts in Theology (Taught Masters)

A degree offering of the University of the West Indies

  • Open to persons with a Bachelor’s Degree in any field
  • Six courses plus a research paper (15,000 words)
  • One year (full-time) or three years (part-time)

Qualifying courses required of candidates who have not previously studied theology at the tertiary level

Master of Philosophy in Theology (research degree)

A degree offering of the University of the West Indies

  • Open to persons with a Bachelor’s Degree in any field
  • Three courses plus a research thesis (40,000 words)

Qualifying courses required of candidates who have not previously studied theology at the tertiary level

Doctor of Philosophy in Theology (research degree)

  • Normal entry to the PhD is through the MPhil programme
  • Four courses, modern language exam, and a research thesis (80,000 words)

Applications must be done online through the University of the West Indies website (Graduate Studies, University of the west Indies, Mona ). The deadline for entry in September is the previous January.

Doctor of Ministry

  • The Doctor of Ministry is a professional ministerial degree which seeks to build on a person’s ministerial experience and enable the candidate to explore issues in gospel and culture contextually. Focusing on ministry with the local congregation, this programme offers students the opportunity to become a more effective leader for God’s people. The programme’s collegial approach encourages students to examine the setting and practices of their ministries
  • Candidates should have a tertiary degree in theology and at least three years of experience in ministry
  • The requirement of the programme (36 credits):
  • 4 elective courses taught at UTCWI (each in an intensive two week period) – 3 credits each
  • A supervised ministry practicum consisting of 400 hours of work in the student’s ministry setting – 6 credits
  • 2 elective courses at Columbia Seminary (in a four week summer period) – 3 credits each>
  • A research project workshop at CTS (non-credits)
  • A qualifying exam
  • A 100 page Research project Report – 6 credits
